Wimbledon will follow the American and Aussie Opens in employing video review technology.
Replay systems will make its debut at Wimbledon this year.
Players are granted the right to contest certain calls made by the official, mirroring the protocol already in place at each of the US Open and the Australian Open.
This technology will be operational on the main stadium and Court One throughout the tournament and on the remaining show courts when they are hosting singles matches.
This move arrives only a year after the AELTC introduced electronic line calling, which brought an end to the centuries-old tradition of line officials.
Scope of Challenges
Players cannot to challenge the accuracy of the ELC system, but they can request the official to re-examine other situations, including:
- Whether a ball has bounced twice.
- If a ball touched an rival's racket or body on the way past.
- Possible interference end of a rally.
Notably, there will be no limit on the amount of reviews a player can request.
Case in Point
A recent example occurred in a recent tournament recently, where a top player used the video challenge against Jack Draper.
Draper conceded it was a tough call for the umpire, but believed his opponent had "played the rules effectively."
The umpire viewed a video and determined Draper was responsible for interference, awarding the point to his opponent.
Wider Implementation
This technology are not exclusive to Grand Slams. The system was adopted at the US Open for two years and the Aussie Open since 2025.
Furthermore, it is becoming more common on the women’s WTA Tour, and by next season the ATP circuit plans to have the system implemented at every one of its tournaments.
Additional Innovations
Another change at The Championships this year involves the introduction of graphical cues on scoreboards to complement the audio calls from the ELC system.
This solves situations where fans have sometimes been unsure if a ball was in or out.
Finally, with precisely a century of days remaining until the beginning of the tournament, organizers have also announced an expansion in daily attendance at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
